Description:

Book Summary:
Alia’s Voice is a warm, hopeful account of a real family, wrenched from their homeland and resettled in Southern Ontario. The title character arrives in 2016 with one word of English, knowing no one except her husband and children, and nothing about her new country. Three years later, encouraged by her new Canadian friends, she finds herself addressing a women's group in her new language, telling her life story, and why she loves her new country. This is her story.

Reviews:
I have stood with Syrian refugees trapped in frigid temperatures due to the sudden closure of Hungarian borders. I have met with Syrian refugees in Lebanon who face many restrictions because of their heritage. The displacement of people around the world, and the need to take flight from war and conflict, is a stain on humanity in general. The statistics are staggering and the politics so complex that many feel overwhelmed by the realities. Ann McRae’s book Alia’s Voice; A Syrian Refugee in Canada helps us to break through our immobilization as we learn of one sponsorship story. We are exposed to the courage, tenacity and resilience of a refugee family and, in particular, through the personal and cultural adjustments of the wife, Alia. McRae also exposes us to the voices of those who performed grassroots assistance in the sponsorship of this family, skillfully reminding us again that each of us can make a profound difference in the lives of others by simple, sensitive and steady acts of kindness. ---- reviewed by The Rev. Dr. Karen Horst, Moderator of the 141st General Assembly of The Presbyterian Church in Canada

This book provides a well deserved tribute to immigration staff at the time of welcoming Syrian refugees. Indeed, so many Canadians pulled above their weight at this time - all the provincial governments that welcomed refugees so warmly, federal and provincial civil servants, immigrant sponsors, and all the settlement agencies, generally the best in the world, that worked incredibly hard to make everything come together. ---reviewed by the Hon. John MacCallum, formerly Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.

In refugee law, we often see the worst of what people can do. Meeting Alia and her family, and the many others whose stories fill the pages of this remarkable book, is a much-needed reminder of the best: of the power of hope, resilience, courage, kindness and friendship. -- reviewed by Hilary Evans Cameron, Assistant Professor, Lincoln Alexander School of Law, Toronto Metropolitan University
Who can forget the heart-wrenching photo journalism of Alan Kurdi, a 2 year old Syrian boy, lying face-down in his death on a public beach in 2015? It produced global horror, lament and an outcry for justice.
In contrast, the responses of joy, intrigue and hope are evoked in Alia’s Voice, authored by Ann McRae. In response to this photo, truly ‘worth a thousand words’, Canada implemented a Sponsorship Program in 2015, and a further response was the sponsorship of Alia, Hussein and their four children by two churches in Clarkson, ON. Read this page-turner story of commitment, struggle, fear and determination, interspersed with engaging historical background, as Alia’s Voice invites us into the journey of sponsorship and the journey of new life from Syria to Canada, and becoming Canadian citizens in 2021.
This personal ‘story’ paints a larger picture that each one of us and all of us collectively can make a difference to mending the injustices of our country and world. --reviewed by the Very Rev. Dr. Marion Pardy, 37th Moderator, The United Church of Canada (2000-2003)

Author Details:

Elizabeth Ann McRae is a retired lawyer living in Dundas, Ontario. She lives with her husband and adult son, and writes fiction and non-fiction. Ann's stories range through humour, biography, history and historical fiction, sometimes standing on the bridge between two genres. Her first book, Love, Life, Loss and Other Four-Letter Words: Messages to Kathie, provoked tears and laughter, sometime on the same page. To find it on Amazon, search for E. Ann McRae.

The writing of Alia’s Voice was prompted by a comment from a reader of Love, Life, Loss and Other Four-Letter Words. Alia's Voice which touches on the arrival of Alia and her family in Canada. Ann’s portrait of Alia, a mother of four, delves into the challenges of leaving behind one’s country and culture, and taking on something entirely different. Alia and Ann have presented the book together, and celebrated the freedom Alia cherishes in becoming a Canadian.

Flashing Lights at Night: The Miraculous Story of a Child's Recovery from a Traumatic Brain Injury is a very different sort of book. The near-catastrophic car accident near Brantford, Ontario on the night of December 22, 2022 leads readers into a true and terrifying story of a brain-injured child and long journey back to health. His parents and a close knit but far-flung community, journey with Caleb through a healing story that will grip you, from the nose-pressed-to-the-glass moments in the emergency department in Hamilton, Ontario to a prairie child's dream to attend a Maple Leaf's game in Toronto, to Caleb's return to music class in rural Saskatchewan, and everything in between.

Ann continues to find story material in the amazing world around us.

Lynda hopes the gift of her ‘Confessions of a P̶e̶r̶f̶e̶c̶t̶ Mom’ will show you that you are not alone in your struggles. Description:

Jim (Tjebbe) Kamstra was a passionate man with a zest for life, who put himself fully in whatever he did, whether running a business, raising a family, fishing, flying his plane, dancing with his wife or fundraising for charity. This book is the life story of Jim, an immigrant who made it in a new country – his milestones, adventures, successes and mishaps. Jim was one who lived life fully.

Growing up in the Netherlands during the Great Depression, then living under German occupation in World War II, Jim learned that he would have to take advantage of whatever opportunities presented themselves. Jim came out of the Great War a young man full of ambition, ready to make his way in the world. The Netherlands held few opportunities at the time, so he emigrated to Canada.

With a tireless work ethic and willingness to do whatever it took to get a job done; Jim impressed anyone for whom he ever worked. However, he realized that he would never be satisfied working for someone else. Even a business partnership did not work for Jim, he had to be his own boss. Since Jim loved gardening, he created a small landscaping company, growing it slowly with every opportunity until it became a successful operation and a family legacy. Jim experienced many chal- lenges along the way and sometimes took more risks than he should have. Often he forged ahead without thinking of all the consequences which sometimes got him into trouble. As a result, he experienced setbacks and suffered more than his share of accidents, on land, air and water. Nevertheless, his determination and ‘never give up’ attitude got him through, at least most of the time.

He is co-author on Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, a guidebook to a wild area in Belize. He has recently published a memoir of his father's adventurous life.

Myrna Rutledge has it all in the summer of '65. A well-curated wardrobe. A diamond with no discernible flaws. A floor plan to die for. The only problem? Her husband, Frank, comes with the plan. And so, after a disastrous twenty-fourth birthday party, Myrna packs it in and heads for L.A. armed with two skirted swimsuits, a bottle of Coppertone, and one million in unmarked bills that Frank has stashed under the guest bed upstairs.

Only L.A. is more seductive than Myrna ever imagined. As for Frank's younger brother, Dan, he's a woundingly attractive artist obsessed with the need to photograph every empty chair in the greater L.A. area. Lonely and alone, Myrna joins him on this quest—a journey that takes her from the dazzling Pacific Ocean to the gleaming photo lab at UCLA where he teaches her how to create the perfect image. There she discovers that she not only has something of value to say, but a unique way in which to say it.

Still, Myrna intends to honor the vows she made before God and her parents and the most expensive caterers in Chicago, Illinois. The problem is that L.A. is the epitome of everything cool that summer, and Myrna finds herself at the epicenter of it all. Warhol. Gernreich. Hockney. Dylan. And Frank's younger brother, Dan.

Brenda Arnold's achingly funny book is a love letter to L.A. in the summer of 1965. It is also a story about love, loss, and the art of becoming another person entirely. If you believe in second chances and enjoy the work of Nora Ephron, Cathleen Schine, and Anne Tyler, this book is for you.

Author Details:

Ms. Arnold has enjoyed a varied career as a professional flamenco dancer, a story analyst at MGM and Universal Studios, and a writer of short fiction. Her stories have won two of the annual short fiction contests sponsored by the National League of American Pen Women. Her work has also won the prestigious Hackney Literary Award for short fiction. She began The Art of Becoming Another Person Entirely during an invitation-only workshop led by the ever-brilliant Justin Cronin, who encouraged her to write a novel and then taught her how. Now far from the dazzling beaches of Southern California, she lives a tranquil life with the family she loves so much and with the ghosts of her many pugs.

Akosua has seen how important sharing your voice, your story is. It is one way of being seen and heard. But she’s also learned how valuable writing is to understand yourself. To do your best writing, you must feel safe and Akosua excels in creating that space for those around her. She extends that search for feeling safe and being seen, celebrated, and supported through her work with Elvira’s Miracle Magnet Movement. She is excited to be one of the newest mentors. She gained so much from this program that she changed her name to reflect her greater self-love and compassion.

Akosua is a new Hamiltonian. She lives in a lovely century home with two of her six children, her too-loud husband, Paul, their three cats, a highly intelligent and grumpy cockapoo, and a canary called Romeo.

Description:

A bold, much-needed guide for Ashtanga yoga practice, useful for all levels and illustrated with 250 color photos, by one of yoga’s best known and respected teachers, Kino MacGregor.

This offers an updated, more accessible view of the traditional series, adapting it to serve a wider range of practitioners.

Even experienced practitioners find the challenging style of Ashtanga Yoga to be daunting. Whether you’re a beginner, living in an unconventional yoga body, or need modifications for any reason, this book will make you feel empowered, inspired, and confident to make the adjustments and modifications that feel right for your body. Kino posits that the Ashtanga Yoga method needs a systemwide reset and reevaluation to make it viable and beneficial to all students. She reframes the guru model and re-envisions the method in a way that will truly make Ashtanga available to all, while maintaining the integrity of the traditional teachings.

She also presents a brief theory of movement mechanics that can help prevent injury, optimize physical mobility, and tap into the natural intelligence of the body. The practice section presents each of the poses of the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series—plus some of the poses in the Ashtanga Yoga Second Series—in traditional, modified, accessible, and adaptive forms (including using blocks and a chair). Not only will you see how to modify the pose, you will learn how best to work the pose for your unique need. Teachers will find plenty of reference material to update their teaching methodology.

Description:

Q's mother was stripped naked. A 14-year-old girl held a gun to her head. Witness is the true story of a family separated by civil war. When a peaceful childhood in Liberia changed in an instant, 8-year-old Q was thrown into the bloodshed, terror, and violence of the Liberian Civil War. Confronted with massacred villages, child soldiers, constant hunger, and the daily threat of death from rebel forces and government troops, Q and his four siblings eventually made it through the horrors of war through the power, grace, and determination of his mother, Neyor. This first book in the WITNESS series takes you back to 1991 through Q's reflections and experiences in the Liberian Civil War--from the once sleepy, safe village of Sugar Hill to surviving through destroyed farmland, drug-crazed child soldiers, and body-strewn streets-- all while his mother fights to protect her children. Ultimately, a confrontation with a ruthless, drug-crazed child tears the family apart and requires that his mother make a devastating choice with far-reaching consequences. WITNESS will open your eyes to the darkest and most beautiful parts of humanity and make you see that on the other side of evil is good. WITNESSLIBERIA.COM SAVEMOREKIDS.ORG

The power of healing to shape humanity.

"A thought-provoking story offering readers plenty to reflect on. A RED RIBBON WINNER and highly recommended!" - The Wishing Shelf Book Awards

Second place at The Bookfest 2022 Awards in Self-Help/Transformation.

Healing is ongoing, it never ends. It’s a journey of turning inward, shedding, and creating space for the true Self to thrive.

Through empathy and compassion we become more human to ourselves. When we break free from the things that are holding us back, we can step forward into the full power of our being to reconnect with ourselves and those around us — because our lives are intertwined in more ways than we know.

In less than 100 pages, award-winning author, Vanessa Ferlaino, offers a fresh perspective on healing. There are no tips or prescriptions in this book. Instead, in her signature rhythmic prose, she shares in-depth revelations of trauma, pain, loss, and love. She divulges the many ways our lives are connected, while gently exposing the nuances of the human condition.

“This book is not about my story,” she says. “It's about the power of inner healing to shape all of humanity.”

This book reminds you that turning inward is about more than just you — it's about all of us. Human will inspire you to take your healing journey to the next level; by being more human to ourselves and each other, we can change the world.

Together, we can heal for humanity.

Description:

This 2006 Silver Birch Award nominee tells the "warts and all" story of John A. Macdonald, Canada's first prime minister. Many people called him a "frightful old rascal," a drunk, a liar, and a scheming thief. But these same people also acknowledged him as "the father and founder of Canada." To this day, Sir John A. Macdonald remains the only Canadian prime minister to throw up in the House of Commons, resign for dishonourable behaviour, and personally take up arms against invading Americans-then defend some of them in court. And that is only a tiny sample of the outrageous acts for which Sir John A. Macdonald is famous! Sir John didn't care whether people liked him or thought him a fool; what he cared most about was that his dear Canada was taking shape and growing by leaps and bounds.

Women s advocate and international best-selling author Crystal Andrus Morissette has announced the release of a new book Simply...Woman: Stories from 30 magnificent women who have risen against the odds. It's a critical time in the world's history, especially for women. We are being called upon like never before to stand up, come together, and rewrite our futures. To remember where we've been, how we got here, and what we want moving forward. Simply... Woman: Stories from 30 magnificent women who have risen against the odds is a powerfully moving compilation of women's experiences from all over the globe. From Canada and the USA to Liberia Africa, Palestine, the UK and the Netherlands, each woman in this collection was selected by Andrus Morissette for her honesty and strength. Choosing only thirty women was extremely difficult. Although every one of these writers could have filled an entire book with their incredible life stories, this book represents as many of the different lived experiences that women routinely face and overcome. Each chapter uncovers a different journey from pain and suffering to wisdom and truth. Let these brave women speak to you. Enlighten and inspire you. Evoke you. Sharing is how we will forge our legacy, create a better future, heal the world . . . one strong woman at a time. These stories will give you the inspiration, faith, and desire needed to channel your pain and suffering into your greatness. Our prayer is that this book helps you feel more empowered to tell your story. Sharing is one of the most cathartic ways of healing. All of our stories matter. #TogetherWeRise #TimesUp #MeToo Andrus Morissette is the author of four other international bestselling books, including 'The Emotional Edge', which Oprah.com featured her Emotional Edge quiz three times. Chapter/Coles/Indigo polled 40,000 readers to see which book most changed their life, Andrus Morissette came in at #14. A media darling, she's been in the New York Post, the UK Daily Mail, the Globe and Mail, and the Toronto Star, as well as CBS Radio, CanadaAM, CityTV, Global TV, and Slice TV. This book is Andrus Morissette's most ambitious project yet. Bestselling author and the Oracle, Colette Baron-Reid calls it, Powerful beyond measure ... a must-read!

Description:

No one expects a catastrophic medical event. What do you do when a seemingly normal day turns into one of the worst days in your life?

Andrew Smith describes what happened after his beloved wife, Janise, called him and with slurred words told him she wasn't feeling well. Within an hour she was in the intensive care unit of the hospital, with tubes everywhere, and machines beeping out her vital medical statistics. The doctors told him she had had a massive stroke and there was nothing for Andrew and his bewildered teenage son to do but pray.

What happened next is lovingly told in this book, produced by collecting the author's journaled thoughts and the social media posts he sent out to his large family and their even larger circle of friends over the course of the first year after Janise's stroke. If you are a stroke survivor, or the family, friend, or medical team that supports survivors, then this book is for you.

Author Details:

Andrew Smith is a certified professional accountant and chartered accountant, author, speaker, and husband to the amazing Janise. He has a high-energy, rambunctious personality, and is known for his infectious sense of humour combined with an unmissable, hearty and loud, evil-villain type of laugh. His humour kept him sane while he supported his wife and family through the shock of her sudden disability. But it was his love for her that helped him work with their professional team to teach her to walk, talk, and dance again. They live in Toronto, Canada with their youngest son.

Author Details:

SHEREEN SUN (they/she) is an artist, author, and acclaimed mentor on the subjects of creativity and self-actualization. She has spent her life living on the margins, inviting the creative spirits of others to come out and play. Shereen teaches people how to express themselves with confidence and authenticity, and she helps people live their Creative Missions by guiding them to build thriving platforms that are as impactful as they are unique.

Shereen has been an art educator since she was 18 years old. Her love for creativity and desire to help the most marginalized youth are what drove her to earn a master’s in urban education with advanced specializations in the visual arts. Her love for waking up the creative spirit of others (or what she likes to call remembering their Creative Mission) led her to become an art teacher in inner city schools and paint murals with communities all around the world. After quitting her job as a teacher to start a nonprofit, she realized that she still wasn’t living her own Creative Mission. While she loved the impact that she could have on

her students, she knew that her Creative Mission was bigger than that.

Called by the desire to engage in her own creative work, she started Radiant Wildheart in 2016. It was then that she discovered that community- building actually was her creative work. By helping people to identify their passions and create a life around them, she soon found herself immersed in a community with thousands of people, with more joining every day. Her global following of loyal creatives, whom she calls Wildhearts, are longing to make a positive and creative impact on the world. She believes that everyone deserves access to the revolutionary healing power of the arts.

Description:

In a world that often misunderstands what it means to be different, living openly as an autistic person can be an act of bravery. Much like the challenges faced by those who were not traditionally gender-oriented in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, being out in the world and open about autism comes with its own unique struggles and triumphs.

Through humor, honesty, and heart, Out in the Spectrum reveals the realities of navigating a world built for neurotypical brains when yours works differently. As an autistic adult, often with other disabilities―some of which place more limits than autism―and as part of a community that includes a higher percentage of those who are not straight or are transgender, building a good life is challenging but remains the goal. Out in the Spectrum celebrates the courage of those who speak out, offering readers a glimpse into the vibrant, creative, and diverse lives of autistic individuals.

Whether you are autistic, love someone who is, or simply want to broaden your understanding, this book is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the transformative power of community. Discover what it means to live authentically, connect meaningfully, and rewrite the narrative around autism.

Description:

Love Hue You Are is a coloring storybook about a confident girl named Zuri who loves and embraces her beautiful dark brown skin.

In the story, Zuri introduces us to her diverse friend group: Jen, Ben, Priya, Keisha, David, Cree, Isaiah, Susie Lu, Grace, Dakota, and Josh. Zuri seeks to highlight that while they are unique and different, they are also similar, share common interests, and have equal value.

Zuri shares her experience of being teased by some children because of her dark brown skin. Although Zuri was quite hurt, she refused to believe their mean comments. Instead, Zuri focused on her mother's encouraging and uplifting words, which made her feel better.

Zuri wants children to know they are special no matter their skin color and encourages them to be kind and accepting of different hues. She also reminds children to love themselves, be themselves, and watch their awesomeness grow.

Overall, Zuri wishes to see children live in a world where racism and colorism do not exist and where children never have to question their beauty or self-worth. Instead, she wants all children to be accepted and included in all areas of life.

Description:

The stories in this book are written by people like you who have been shocked and forced to make big changes to their lives due to novel coronavirus that was first recognized in 2019, the powerful COVID-19.
You’ll find many stories here that will make you smile, or nod your head based on shared experiences. A few will make you cry, and others will make you laugh out loud. They cover a wide number of subjects including COVID conspiracy stories and COVID romances, and some writers describe coronavirus mental health impacts. One writer has provided a handy checklist so you can be prepared for the second wave or even another pandemic. Another tells us her story of being trapped in a tiny cabin on the Diamond Princess, the cruise ship quarantined in Japan. The sudden shutdown of the travel industry also affected those who specialized in helping people enjoy their dream vacations and so many others were made to work from home or became unemployed due to the subsequent depression of the economy.

This once-in-a-lifetime experience has both devastated people and unified them. One thing we know is that writing and sharing stories heal.

Grab your copy and enjoy nineteen tales of COVID-19.

They hunt us

They imprison us

They exile us

More than a century after an asteroid hits Earth, the survivors live in the Hollows, a self-sustaining city far below the Earth’s frozen surface. While some live a lavish lifestyle, others are forced into servitude by the ruling Commission and its oppressive soldiers, the Authority. Shy and anxious by nature, Charlie Edge does her best to keep a low profile and keep her powers hidden. But how do you hide when your dead father was an infamous rebel leader?

Yet when an outrageous stranger confronts the Authority and messages her to protect something, she does. Now she is exposed and the Commissioner’s wife has vowed to destroy her and her friends. Charlie’s risk sets them on a dangerous path, one which embroils them in a complex web of deception and forces them into a course of action that threatens to rip their entire world apart. Not knowing who to trust, Charlie must summon all her strength to fight back before time runs out in the only safe place anyone has ever known.

Description:

Sandy always stood out. From a young age, she was labeled as "too loud," "selfish," and "unladylike." She couldn't help but feel invisible, like a vibrant painting hidden behind a dull curtain.

As she grew into a woman, the pressure to conform only intensified, but it was the 1980s and the music, the makeup, power suits, and sexual hookups were fun. Sandy survived work with precious few hours of sleep but as the fun became routine, she went back to feeling small and invisible. She had no idea what was holding her back.

In her memoir, From Invisible to Technicolor, Sandy takes us along as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, sexual awakening, and empowerment. She learns that it's not selfish to prioritize her own happiness and dreams. Through trials and tribulations, she sheds the layers of societal and familial expectations, embracing her true self with all its colors and complexities.

In a world that tried to make her invisible, Sandy becomes a beacon of individuality and strength. This is a story of resilience, self-acceptance, and the audacious pursuit of a life lived authentically, unafraid to be technicolor in a world that expects women to be quiet and invisible.

Author Details:

Sandy O’Shea is a holistic sexpert, intimacy coach, and dynamic speaker dedicated to helping individuals embrace their authentic selves and foster deeper intimacy in their relationships. With over five years of experience as a sought-after speaker, podcast guest, and TV contributor, Sandy uses her expertise in holistic approaches to sexuality, hormones, and relationships to inspire personal transformation.

Her debut book, Let’s Talk About Sex with Sandy, offers practical advice for men and women looking to improve their health, balance hormones, and enhance their intimate connections.

Sandy’s talent for storytelling extends to her two captivating erotic novellas, When Friends Become Lovers and Lost Then Found, both available on Amazon in Kindle and paperback.

Her most personal work, From Invisible to Technicolor: A Memoir, is a powerful account of her journey from self-doubt to self-discovery. In this deeply honest book, Sandy shares her struggles with self-worth, family dynamics, and the healing process after her father’s sexual misconduct. She provides a roadmap for women to break free from societal pressures, reclaim their identity, and unapologetically embrace their true selves. Accompanying the memoir is From Invisible to Technicolor: A Journal, a practical guide to transformation, focusing on building healthy habits and cultivating a positive mindset.

Through her books, workshops, and her platform, Let’s Talk Sex with Sandy, Sandy empowers women to reconnect with their sensuality, uncover their personal power, and celebrate their divine femininity.

Sandy resides in the picturesque Kawartha Lakes Region of Ontario, Canada, where she continues to write, coach, and inspire others to live bold, authentic lives.

Description:

"An accessible guide for those wanting more" gives an accurate description of MYNDFUL's dual aim: i) to remove any barriers upon the practices of yoga, meditation and mindfulness for those feeling 'on the outside', and ii) to deepen the understanding of this body of knowledge for those who have already dipped their feet into its pool.

Working across five distinct sections designed to offer stand-alone insights, MYNDFUL is the first book of its kind to deliver teachings from this often elusive subject in easily digestible, five-minute-read portions.

With the ever-encroaching digital world bombarding us with stimuli and drowning in bits of information, we are desperately in need of what yoga and mindfulness have to offer. Finding calm in turbulence, clarity in fog and true contentment in our everyday trials is what we are all seeking. The teachings in this book are the medicines to cure what ails us. They are within our reach, in unlimited supply, for any and all who recognize that there just has to be more to life than our unending lists and schedules would suggest.

Like hitting the fast-forward button on decades of daily practice in these ancient disciplines, MYNDFUL is the proverbial Coles Notes on all things consciousness and the nature of the mind - for when you just don't have the extra ten or thirty years to painstakingly unearth them for yourself.

Description:

When Sara Rahimi was a teenager living in Iran's capital, she dreamed of a life where she could do or be whatever she wanted to. She longed to become like Oprah and Ellen: free, powerful, and inspiring. Instead, she lived in an atmosphere characterized by fear and terror - one where Morality Police monitored her every move, and gendered cultural norms determined her life's path. She once begged a male friend to jump out of her family's second story window in order to avoid harsh punishment from the police for an unauthorized co-ed after-school hang-out.

Flash forward to today, and Sara lives in a new country and finds herself voluntarily jumping-- out of a plane rather than a building. From skydiving to a career change, Sara has finally become everything she's ever dreamed of in her new homeland in Canada. Still, Sara can't shake the feeling that she does not fully belong in her new world and that something is missing.

In Little Sara of Tehran, she learns to overcome her past, and move forward by trusting her instincts, following her gut, and transforming her deepest grief into her life's greatest purpose.

Description:

This book is for everyone at some time in their life. If you're breathing, this book's for you... or your parents, friends, teenagers moving into their first apartment, newlyweds, new parents, siblings, ... oh, and the person or people you name as executor. Hope to be a beneficiary or heir? Yup, you too. Think you can do it alone? Be my guest, but first Google "executor horror stories."

What makes this book different?
- It's four for the price of one: You can use it when you're naming, accepting to be, or serving as executor, and if you're an heir or beneficiary.
- It's by a layperson who survived: Most of what you'll find about naming, being, and dealing with executors comes from legal, financial, or tax experts, and governments. Makes sense. For them, death is a growth industry. But for you, it's about naming someone you trust to look after your affairs when you die, understanding the effort and risks if you've been asked to be an executor, managing an estate effectively if you're acting as one, and knowing where you stand if you expect to inherit.
- It offers useful tools: The book provides plain-language explanations, checklists, templates, and tips.
- It's long-lasting: While legal, tax, accounting, and financial rules change, and the book mainly uses Ontario examples, the process to follow and the questions to ask experts will not. Also, the approach is generally similar to that in many other countries.
- Caution: To help relieve the subject's misery and tedium, this book uses humour-be warned!

Author Details:

Barb is a recovering executor who’s co-managed three estates and consoled others in the sorry throes of executorial duties. She served for years in the salt mines of the financial industry, encountering the weird and wonderful ways of financial institutions, advisors, regulators, policymakers, lawyers, tax professionals, bureaucrats, and government tax authorities. Her experiences with funeral homes, cemeteries, as well as heirs and beneficiaries? Well, some she’d just like to forget. In writing this book, she researched and became addicted to executor stories from the odd to the instructional to the “what were they thinking?!"

Most recently, Barb led a team and co-authored content for Heritage Lower St. Lawrence’s 2022 Governor General Award-winning multi-disciplinary "Live Our Heritage." She’s been published in The Quebec Chronicle Telegraph, Wealth Professional, Canadian Investment Review, Canadian Banker, The Observer, and Irish Banking Review.

Barb has made regulatory submissions to people she thinks should know better, including on how to make estate management and other painful processes much easier. She longs for a simpler life and argues frequently with her husband about who better not die first.

Description:

Do you want to be on the cutting edge of the future of yoga?

If you desire an authentic yoga practice embracing ancient yogic philosophy and traditions but don’t know how to embody that knowledge with integrity in today’s modern yoga culture, Embrace Yoga’s Roots is your guide to honor and not appropriate yoga.

"When we mistake yoga for a workout routine, reduce it to physical fitness or even do some of the deeper aspects of yoga without an eye to the whole system of liberation it offers, we rob ourselves and each other of the potential of this practice," says Susanna Barkataki.

Embrace Yoga's Roots explores the past's yogic traditions, brings them alive today, and preserves them for the future by examining what separates us, reflecting on our part, taking action for equity and moving toward liberation together. If you practice, teach or want to learn yoga integrating your ethics and values while respecting ancient yoga philosophy, you have found the essential guide to making that goal a reality.

"I can't think of anyone more suited to lead the way to embrace yoga's roots than Susanna. This book should be required reading in yoga teacher trainings across the world." ~ Rachel Brathen – author of the New York Times Bestseller Yoga Girl

The Embrace Yoga Roots Framework revealed in this book shares four keys steps to deepen your yoga practice, increase empathy and create unity both personally and with the world.

Separation: Learning how colonization, cultural appropriation, and oppression results in trauma for yogis and separation from yoga traditions.
Reflection: Understanding the causes of separation and our roles, either supporting separation (knowingly or not) versus creating unity and equity in yoga.
Reconnection: Exploring specific and concrete skills and solutions for living and practicing yoga as unity, inspiring global transformation.
Liberation: Integrating a more honorable and ethical practice in your life supporting personal growth by following the ancient teachings.

Barkataki shares tools, resources and gentle guidance demonstrating how you can embody a complete yoga practice that includes and extends beyond the physical, the mindful and the sacred to something equitable, inclusive and accessible for everyone on all levels of their being. This book is more than a textbook on yoga's history but a practical guide offering reflective questions for the personal exploration of challenging topics leading to personal and social transformation. Embrace Yoga's Roots shows you how to take this awakened understanding and vital message into your local yoga community, helping to connect you with the yoga community worldwide.

Lead the global movement now by honoring and embracing ancient philosophies, practices and lifestyles supporting a unified yogic state.

Author Details:

Susanna Barkataki is a yoga diversity and unity educator and the founder of Ignite Yoga and Wellness Institute. Her identity as a refugee to the U.S. fleeing violence as a mixed Indian and British Desi, fuels her passion for bridging cultural connections with yoga.

She believes in a world where yoga and mindfulness support us in dissolving the illusion of separation to create unity and interconnection.

This is unity that doesn’t erase difference, but invites connection with the broken or shameful parts of ourselves, with those we think of as other, and harmonizes relationships with culture, land, earth and all life.

Her work explores how we can decolonize, reclaim and honor our yoga practice for healing personally and socially.

She has an Honors degree in Philosophy from UC Berkeley, a Masters in Education from Cambridge College, is an E-RYT 500 hour Master Teacher, a 500-Hour Certified Ayurvedic practitioner and a Certified Yoga Therapist with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (C-IAYT). Description:

God of the Old Testament Exposed is highly engaging as it presents compelling arguments suggesting that the Bible was written by fallible humans with specific agendas. It draws parallels between the ancient peoples who became the Israelites and other groups in our modern world. These comparisons help illustrate how a warring people in Bible times might choose a fearsome god to represent them, despite also describing God as loving and compassionate. This presents a contradiction, especially when considering the acts of violence attributed to God throughout the Old Testament, including commands for blood sacrifices and filicide.

The author argues that these stories of blood sacrifice, often overlooked by Christians, reflect the violent histories of the peoples who wrote the original texts of the Old Testament. He compares this to his own history of a fierce people defending themselves as superior to the majority population and stood firm against global criticism. A similar warlike attitude of survival and being the only chosen people helps the reader see why both populations might believe in a fierce god who demands blind loyalty and requires sacrifice as proof of faith.

The author’s personal story guides us through how a community under threat would shape their image of themselves into a fierce rather than peaceful God.

The narrative then shifts to Jesus, questioning the traditional view of blood sacrifices, which challenges conventional Christian teachings presenting Jesus as such a blood sacrifice.

The book is thought-provoking, making you reconsider the version of God that many have been taught to fear and love. It was a bit scary or “triggering” as it questions the very nature of God. As it is a controversial subject, it is good that the author uses many references to connect readers to direct sources. This certainly builds trust as does his own story.

The delivery of the material in ways which first start opening a crack where you might examine what you have been taught and then give you more and more evidence so that you are willing to challenge what you learned is a smart way to structure the book. In the end, you might feel quite shook-up, as you realised you had not examined, only accepted, the version of God passed down through Sunday school, worship, and holiday gatherings.

Overall, it's a compelling book that challenges established religious beliefs and prompts deep reflection on who God really is.

Author Details:

Gert Janse van Rensburg, South African born and raised on an African farm devoted his life to the Christian faith.
